John Amacher County Park
Greetings, all! Hope you are well. My human and I are fine. Just enduring the wet winter that is western Oregon. We do occasionally have a few drier days that allows us to get out doors. I like those days. I going to tell you about one if those days.
My human likes to explore. She found a park here in Roseburg called John Amacher County Park. At first it looked like nothing more than a boat ramp into the North Umpqua River. However, there is an RV campground on the other side of a railway bridge. She decided to drive through that campground. She discovered a Myrtlewood Grove hidden back behind the campground with trails winding through it. SCORE!
The main trail has the North Umpqua River to the north, and a tall steep hill to the south. This shelters the park from the town, making it feel very remote. There are a few small creeks that empty into the river. Because they are coming down from the hill, they form a number of small waterfalls. They were beautiful and filled the grove with the sounds of rushing water. So relaxing!
We were able to walk along the trail for about a quarter to a third of a mile before felled trees stopped us. I was able to continue, but my human couldn't get her walker past the debris. However, the walk up to that point was very nice. We saw an amazing assortment of mushrooms (as usual, my human wouldn't let me ingest them) along with some lovely views of the river, not to mention birds and squirrels. I climbed trees, checked out bugs, and enjoyed the sounds and smells of nature! Ummm, good. In my opinion, any day in the woods is a good day! (Ok, any DRY day! Not too fond of the rain.)
A creek as it feeds into the North Umpqua River.
There was one drawback to Amacher Park. It is located right next to I-5. There was quite a bit of traffic noise, mostly from those giant moving monsters my human calls semi's. I don't like them. I mean I REALLY don't like them. So before we got onto the trail in the grove, and after leaving the grove, their noise did make me a bit nervous. I don't trust those big monsters. What's to stop them from coming after me? I mean really. What?
We did survive without incident however. And the park was nice. I bet it is even better in the summer. So again, some of the nicest places are close to home. Plus, no long car rides! Just remember, wherever you roam, look for the beauty and stay away from big giant monsters! And, as always, keep wandering my friends, keep wandering.
